What is a generic medication?

In other words, generic medications have the same pharmacological effects as their brand-name counterparts. Over half of all prescribed medications are for generic medications.

Ziana Helps Treat the Following Conditions:

Acne

Acne is the most common skin problem in the United States. It is caused by dead skin cells and oil blocking the pores of the skin and can manifest in a number of blemishes on the skin including blackheads, whiteheads, papules, pustules, cysts, and nodules. Acne is most typical in teenagers but can persist in adults, too. Treatments for acne are available and are recommended to prevent permanent scarring of the skin.

Marketed Internationally as Bianca Topical Gel

In some countries, Ziana is sold under the brand name Bianca Topical Gel.

Ziana Active Ingredient

Ziana is a combination treatment for acne which contains two main ingredients: tretinoin and clindamycin. Tretinoin belongs to a class of medications called retinoids, which prevent dead skin cells from blocking pores. Clindamycin is an antibiotic which stops the growth of acne-causing bacteria.

General Drug Information

What is Ziana and What Is It Used For?

Ziana is a prescription medication used to treat acne. It can reduce the number of acne pimples in addition to helping the skin heal more quickly. Ziana is prescribed to adults and adolescents 12 years and older.

Usage and Application

Before starting this medication, patients should read the patient information leaflet.

Ziana is used once a day, usually before bedtime. To apply, wash hands and gently clean the affected skin with a mild, soapless cleanser and pat dry. Using their fingertips, users should apply a small, pea-sized amount of medication in a thin layer.

This medication should only be applied to the skin. Avoid the eyes and the lip area. Do not apply to the inner lip or inside the nose or mouth. Do not apply on skin that has been scraped, cut, sunburned, or affected by eczema.

After use, patients should wash their hands thoroughly to avoid accidentally getting medication in the eyes or mouth. Should medication enter the eyes, patients should flush with large amounts of water. Contact the treating physician in the event of eye irritation.

A patient’s acne may appear to worsen during the first few weeks of treatment, as the medication works on pimples forming within the epidermis. It may take several weeks to see improvement.

Patients should use Ziana regularly to experience its full benefit. It is best if the medication is applied at the same time each day, in order to remember. Patients should use this medication exactly as prescribed. Using Zlana more frequently than directed (or using larger amounts than prescribed) may worsen negative side effects like redness, peeling, and pain.

Ziana is absorbed through the skin and its active ingredients can harm an unborn baby. Pregnant women – or those who may become pregnant – should not handle this medication.

Patients should inform their doctor in the event their condition worsens.

Considerations Before Taking Ziana

Before starting treatment, patients need to discuss the possibility of allergic reactions to Ziana or its main ingredients. It is also important to mention any allergies to lincomycin or to other retinoids such as isotretinoin.

It is vital to discuss the patient’s medical history, especially eczema.

Ziana should not be used by patients with certain intestinal problems. Patients should report if they suffer from the following diseases: regional enteritis, ulcerative colitis, colitis caused by the use of antibiotics, Clostridium difficile-associated diarrhea, or Crohn's disease.

This medication may cause increased sensitivity to sunlight. Patients should limit time in the sun, and wear sunscreen and protective clothing when outdoors. Avoid tanning booths and sunlamps. During treatment, patients should avoid electrolysis, waxing, and chemical depilatories for hair removal on all skin areas where Ziana is being applied.

It is important to contact the treating physician in the event of sunburn or skin blisters or redness. After a sunburn, patients should wait for the skin to recover fully before resuming treatment with Ziana. Weather extremes, such as wind or cold, may also irritate skin.

If patients have recently used skin products containing sulfur, resorcinol, or salicylic acid, they should use this product with caution. It is important to wait until these products’ effects have decreased before starting Ziana treatment.

This medication is not recommended during pregnancy. Women who are pregnant – or who may become pregnant – should not handle this product.

It is not known whether Ziana passes into breast milk. Women should consult their doctor before breast feeding.

Delayed and Omitted Doses

Patients who forget to use Ziana should take it as soon as they remember. If patients remember the following day, they should wait until it is time for the scheduled dose.

Other Medications and Ziana

Drug interactions may change the way Ziana works, increasing the risk of side effects. Before beginning treatment, patients need to discuss the full list of medications and supplements they are taking with their doctor. Patients should not change their dose or stop taking this medication unless their physician advises them to do so.

Some products – such as erythromycin skin products or hair perming solutions – may interact negatively with Ziana. Cosmetic products that contain alcohol (such as astringents, toners, and shaving lotions) have a similar effect, as do medicated/abrasive soaps and cleansers.

Ziana interacts negatively with products containing alpha hydroxy acid, glycolic acid, salicylic acid, sulfur, and resorcinol. Patients should not use this medication together with soaps and cosmetics which have a strong drying effect, as well as any other drugs which increase sensitivity to sunlight.

Examples include fluoroquinolones such as ciprofloxacin (e.g. Cipro), diuretic medications (like Hydrodiuril), and tetracycline antibiotics.

Antibacterial drugs such as sulfamethoxazole, and phenothiazine drugs (like the mood disorder medication Thorazine), also increase sensitivity to sunlight.

Products which contain benzoyl peroxide can be extremely irritating and may decrease the effectiveness of Ziana if the two products are applied at the same time. Patients should consult their doctor about the safe use of prescription and non-prescription benzoyl peroxide products.

Adverse Reactions

Most patients are able to use Ziana safely and without serious negative side effects.

In the first two to four weeks of treatment, patients may experience skin redness, dryness, itching, peeling, mild burning, or worsening acne. These negative symptoms usually subside with continued use. It is recommended to use a daytime moisturizer. Patients should contact their doctor in the event these effects persist or worsen. Some patients may be directed to stop using the medication or to decrease how often they use it.

Serious side effects include blistering, crusting, and severe burning or swelling of the skin.

In rare cases, Ziana may be absorbed into the bloodstream and cause a severe intestinal condition, known as Clostridium difficile-associated diarrhea. This condition is caused by resistant bacteria and may occur weeks after treatment has stopped.

Symptoms of Clostridium difficile-associated diarrhea include persistent diarrhea, stomach pain, and blood or mucus in the stool. Patients should not use anti-diarrhea products or narcotic pain medications to alleviate the above symptoms, as this may exacerbate the problem.

Serious allergic reactions to Ziana are rare, yet patients should be aware of symptoms including rash, itching and swelling, severe dizziness, and trouble breathing.

How to Store Ziana

Ziana should be stored at room temperature, away from light and moisture. Gel preparations are flammable and should not be exposed to heat or fire sources. Do not freeze. Keep away from children and pets.

Unwanted medication should be disposed of properly and should not be poured into drains or flushed down the toilet. Patients should consult a pharmacist or their local waste disposal company to find out more about safe disposal methods.
