What is a generic medication?
Generic medications are significantly discounted copies of brand name medication that have the same active ingredients, intended use, dosage, side effects, effects, and route of administration as the original brand name medication. In other words, generic medications have the same pharmacological effects as their brand-name counterparts. Over half of all prescribed medications are for generic medications.
Vesicare Helps Treat the Following Conditions:
Overactive bladder (OAB)
Patients with this condition experience a frequent and sudden urge to urinate, sometimes resulting in involuntary incontinence. Women are more likely to be affected by this condition, especially those with weakened pelvic floor muscles after pregnancy or following multiple pregnancies. Aging and decreased cognitive function are other risk factors.
OAB symptoms include the urgent need to urinate, difficulty in controlling urination and involuntary loss of urine. Patients visit the bathroom more than eight times in 24 hours with the need to urinate, as well as being woken more than once during the night.
Vesicare Active Ingredient
Generic Vesicare Alternative:Â Solifenacin-Succinate
The active ingredient in Vesicare is called solifenacin, an antispasmodic. Like all medicines in this class, solifenacin alleviates muscle cramps – in this case, the muscles of the bladder. This helps to reduce involuntary contractions of the bladder which cause the frequent and urgent need to urinate.
Patients have a choice of buying brand name Vesicare or generic alternatives. A number of safe, affordable generic alternatives to Vesicare are available through our international online pharmacy.
General Drug Information
What is Vesicare and What Is It Used For?
Solifenacin, the active ingredient in Vesicare, is an antispasmodic prescribed to patients suffering from an overactive bladder. It relaxes the muscle of the bladder, reducing cramping and preventing the involuntary loss of urine. Vesicare and its generic alternatives also reduce the urgency to urinate and help reduce the number of trips to the bathroom.
Usage and Application
Vesicare should be taken exactly as prescribed by a patient’s doctor, and the dosage depends on the patient’s condition and response to treatment. The dosage should not be increased without consulting a doctor or physician, and patients should not take this medication for longer than they have been prescribed.
Most patients are prescribed one daily oral dose with or without food. The tablet has a strong bitter taste and should be swallowed whole with a full glass of liquid.
Patients need to use Vesicare regularly in order to experience its full benefit. It is advisable to take the medication at the same time each day. This reduces the risk of forgetting.
Patients should alert their doctor about any other prescription medicines or supplements they may be taking.
Considerations Before Taking Vesicare
Patients need to discuss the possibility of allergic reactions to solifenacin or any inactive ingredients in Vesicare before starting treatment.
It is vital to discuss the patient’s medical history, especially any problems with urinary retention or bladder outflow obstruction. Patients should also alert their doctor if they suffer from stomach blockage, known as gastric retention, or from other stomach or bowel conditions such as ulcerative colitis, constipation, and slow movement of the stomach or intestines..
A family history of glaucoma should be discussed, as well as a diagnosis of myasthenia gravis, an autoimmune disease causing weakness in the skeletal muscles. In addition, patients should mention liver and kidney disease, as well as enlarged prostate problems, to their doctor.
The active ingredient in Vesicare can cause drowsiness and blurred vision. Patients should avoid tasks that require clear vision or concentration, such as operating machinery. Alcohol or marijuana use should be limited.
Patients preparing for surgery or certain dental procedures should inform their doctor or dentist about all medicines, supplements and herbal products they are taking.
Some patients taking solifenacin may find that they produce less sweat. This increases the likelihood of getting heat stroke. On hot days, patients should drink plenty of fluids and avoid exercising or performing any activities that may cause them to overheat. In the event of heat exhaustion, patients should take immediate steps to cool down and rest. Seek immediate medical attention if symptoms of serious overheating – mood changes, headache or dizziness – persist.
Older adults are likely to be more sensitive to the negative side effects of Vesicare, especially trouble urinating, constipation, confusion, and drowsiness. They should also be aware of an increased risk of falling.
Pregnant women should discuss usage of this drug with their doctor. It is not known whether solifenacin passes into breast milk.
Delayed and Omitted Doses
Patients who miss a dose of Vesicare should take it as soon as they remember. If this happens near the time for the next dose, patients should skip the missed dose and proceed as usual. Patients should not double up the dose in order to catch up.
Other Medications and Vesicare
Drug interactions may change the way Vesicare works and can increase the risk of side effects. Before starting treatment, patients need to discuss the full list of medications and supplements they are taking with their doctor. Patients should not change their dose or stop taking this medication unless their physician advises them to do so.
Some substances, such as pramlintide – a main ingredient in the diabetic drug Symli – may react negatively with Vesicare. Potassium tablets have a similar effect.
Other medications may affect the removal of solifenacin from the body, affecting how it works. These may include antifungal medications containing itraconazole and ketoconazole.
Adverse Reactions
Common side effects include dry mouth or eyes, blurred vision, drowsiness, headache, unusual tiredness, upset stomach or constipation.
Drinking water, chewing gum, or sucking on candy or ice chips helps to relieve dry mouth. Constipation can be avoided by eating a fiber-rich diet, drinking plenty of water and exercising regularly. Some patients may need to use laxatives but need to consult a physician or pharmacist first.
Serious side effects include severe stomach pain, constipation lasting longer than three days, difficulty urinating, and mood changes including confusion or hallucinations. Patients should also monitor for signs of kidney disease such as painful or frequent urination, bloody urine, and fever.
It is important to seek immediate medical help in the event of eye pain, swelling or redness. Vision changes like seeing rainbows around lights at night should be immediately reported.
Serious allergic reactions to Vesicare are rare, yet patients should be aware of allergy symptoms such as rash, itching and swelling, severe dizziness and trouble breathing.
How to Store Vesicare
Vesicare should be stored at room temperature away from light or moisture. Do not store in the bathroom. Keep away from children and pets.
Unwanted medication should be disposed of properly and should not be poured into drains or flushed down the toilet. Patients should consult a pharmacist or their local waste disposal company to find out more about safe disposal methods.
